WHY did the tortoise cross the road?

That is the question that has bemused a Hatfield mum – who has now named the runaway Usain Bolt.

She had to slam her brakes on in Green Lanes near Lemsford to avoid running over the fleet-footed reptile, and has been looking after it for nearly a month.

Rachel Roberts, of Broom Close, Hatfield, added that the lovable fugitive seems somewhat shell-shocked, stating: “He just walks around and he seems very depressed.”

The mother-of-two said: “I really want to find the owners because they must be going spare.”

The 42-year-old has contacted the police, but officers say they have not had any reports of the missing animal.

If nobody comes forward, Rachel will look to find him a suitable place to live.

She said: “He is a real character.

“They can live up to 100 so there will need to be someone who can take over when they demise.”
