The group behind an anti-airfield campaign has thrown its weight behind proposals for 650 homes in Panshanger.

Herts Green Valley – which launched a petition to down plans for a community airfield – has backed landowner Mariposa Investment’s proposals for the former Panshanger Aerodrome site.

As well as the housing, Mariposa wants to include a two-form entry primary school, retail and community facilities, and allotments.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We support the application for 650 homes, but we would prefer the more comprehensive development of 800/900 homes as originally envisaged.”

He said that would enable developers to pay for environmentally friendly infrastructure in the Mimram Valley – such as cycle paths and recreation areas.

He added: “We oppose the airfield development as it seems the remaining infrastructure does not sustain the proposal and we are worried about the effects of noise and air pollution on the surrounding countryside.”
