Archant

The "mindless" destruction of saplings in Welwyn Garden City has angered residents.

Police were notified after three Liquidambar saplings, known as Sweet Gum, on Black Fan Road were snapped.

It is believed the vandalism took place Friday night, January 25, and anyone with information is urged to contact police.

A Welwyn Hatfield Council spokesperson said: “We simply cannot understand why anyone would want to mindlessly destroy something that brings so many benefits to our environment and communities.

“The three Liquidamber trees that were lost have been growing for around 4-5 years and you could already see how beautiful they would have been come spring.

“We will replant the trees during the next planting season in 2019/20.”

Work of the vandalism has spread on social media and provoked angry responses from a number of residents.

Anyone with information should call the Police on 101, quoting reference number 41/9097/19.
