Frustrated residents are up in arms over missed bin collections due to cars clogging up their road - Holly Close, Hatfield.

Receptionist Julie Simson believes it is students who are causing the parking “nightmare” and has complained to both the University of Hertfordshire and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

Mrs Simson said: “Our bins haven’t been emptied because the lorries can’t get down the road. It’s just causing us misery. It’s dreadful.”

A council spokesman said Serco had recently made three attempts to collect rubbish from Holly Close.

He added: “Illegally parked vehicles that obstruct the highway can be reported to the police.”

Geraldine Ward, dean of students, said: “University security staff are proactively patrolling each day and we are working very closely with the University Police Team, who are ticketing any vehicles causing an obstruction.”
