An elderly woman had to wait three hours in the rain for an ambulance after falling over in Welwyn Garden City.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, injured her head in the fall at about 12pm today in The Campus, according to an ambulance service spokesman.

He confirmed she was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived at 3pm, before she was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

During the wait passersby covered her with umbrellas and coats.

The spokesman stressed that stretched services are forcing crews to prioritise life-threatening conditions.
