Officers looking into a report of an attempted child abduction at Knebworth’s Geronimo Festival yesterday say they have established it was a case of mistaken identity.

A post widely shared on social media described an attempt to abduct a small girl at the children’s festival at about 10.30am, while she was in her buggy as her father took a picture.

“My husband managed to chase them and get her back but in the confusion they got away,” the post’s author wrote, before asking for witnesses to help track the alleged abductors down.

But police have this afternoon told the Comet: “It appears a couple mistook another person’s pushchair for their own and didn’t realise.

“Independent witnesses have confirmed this, and we are satisfied there are no safeguarding concerns.”

Geronimo Festival, which has been likened to “Glastonbury for kids”, took place over Saturday and Sunday. It is billed as the UK’s largest festival for children aged up to 14.
