The police have now confirmed that a motorcyclist died in a crash on the A1(M) last night, with the motorway shut northbound for more than 12 hours.

An appeal for witnesses has been launched following the collision between the motorbike, a lorry and a car which took place at about 7.30pm at the northbound exit slip road at Junction 6 for Welwyn.

The motorcyclist – a man in his 50s – died at the scene. Nobody else was injured.

Officers are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101 – particularly in relation to the motorcyclist appearing to lose control.

The A1(M) has now fully reopened northbound after being shut between Junction 4 for Hatfield and Junction 6 for Welwyn for more than 12 hours.

The southbound stretch was shut from Stevenage at Junction 7 last night, with lane closures remaining in place this morning.

Traffic has been at a standstill this morning, but is now expected to begin to clear.
