TAILBACKS caused by "rubberneckers" is now affecting traffic on the southbound lanes of the A1(M).

Traffic jams are currently stretching back into Bedfordshire following a crash on the northbound carriage between Welwyn and Stevenage.

A police spokeswoman said: "A smaller road traffic accident on the southbound carriage way is not helping the situation."

Traffic in the northbound carriageway is queuing as police are forcing all vehicles off the road at Welwyn, junction six.

Traffic is being diverted through Knebworth and is allowed back on at Stevenage.
