Police have warned residents to be vigilant after a 79-year-old woman was targeted as part of a telephone scam in Potters Bar.
The victim was contacted by a man stating she had PPI repayments owing to her.
He then told her to visit the Post Office and purchase a ‘One4All’ gift voucher before saying he would call back later to redeem the code, in order for her payment to be processed.
Sergeant Chris Payne said: “Thankfully the victim realised this was a scam and didn’t make the purchase.
“However, we have previously seen people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, fall prey to the highly persuasive nature of these fraudsters and lose hundreds of pounds in the process.
“I would like to stress that genuine companies would never ask for payments to be made in gift vouchers of any kind.
“If you receive a call of a similar nature, hang up and report it to police. Please also share this advice with older friends and relatives to make them aware.”
He urged anyone who believes they have been called in similar circumstances to report it via non-emergency number 101.
