A man has been charged following a police investigation into shoplifting and robbery offences.

Kio Briggs, 54, of Birkbeck Road in Tottenham, was arrested at Potters Bar train station on Saturday, October 17, after officers responded to a report of shoplifting at Sainsbury's in Darkes Lane.

Police recovered suspected stolen goods and two knives at the scene.

Further investigation linked Mr Briggs to a robbery at the same store earlier in the month, in which shop staff were reportedly threatened.

He has been charged with two counts of shoplifting, two counts of possession of a pointed or bladed article, possession of an offensive weapon, and robbery.

PC Charlie Palmer, from the Hertsmere Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We understand the impact that retail crime and violence can have on shop workers and businesses.

"This was a swift arrest and has resulted in a suspect being charged with a number of serious offences.

"I hope this reassures the local business community."

Mr Briggs has been remanded in police custody and is scheduled to appear at St Albans Crown Court on Monday, November 9.
