Poundland says it is “bemused” that notices appeared in the windows of its Hatfield store suggesting it had been repossessed.

Yesterday (October 20), Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) posted papers on the town-centre shop, leaving shoppers concerned.

A “take notice” said the borough council had repossessed the premises and warned that re-entering them would be a criminal offence.

Another document, dated October 20, said the borough council intended to sell or dispose of the property and the Poundland store’s “attached inventory”.

The store remained closed today.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: "We were a little bemused by Welwyn council’s action, but are pleased to say they have reversed their decision, and the store will reopen tomorrow.

"It appears they misunderstood the terms of Poundland’s restructure plan approved by the high court in August 2025.

"Nevertheless, we’re pleased they’ve now recognised this.

"We have re-entered the premises today and expect to reopen tomorrow morning as normal."

When contacted, the borough council suggested an agreement had now been reached with Poundland, but only allowing them to trade in the lead up to Christmas.

"We hope that this will lessen the impact on staff at this difficult time," a spokesperson said.

"We are currently unable to comment further."

The High Court-approved plan included rent reductions for some stores after Poundland said many sites were unprofitable at their existing rents.
