Welwyn RFC delivered a powerful statement with a 42-13 away victory.

The win came against Biggleswade RFC on Saturday, October 17, in a match that saw Welwyn cross the line six times to register their first win of the season.

The result was a much-needed boost after back-to-back defeats to Hitchin and Old Albanians.

Biggleswade took an early 3-0 lead after a penalty in the opening five minutes, but Welwyn hit back almost immediately.

A knock-on from the restart handed Welwyn an attacking scrum, and after working through the phases, Josh Walkey went over in the corner for their opening try.

Ki Wells landed a superb conversion to put Welwyn 7-3 ahead.

The visitors built on their momentum with strong carries and slick handling, forcing another Biggleswade mistake.

After kicking to the corner, Welwyn executed a clinical lineout move that saw Antonio Denton power over from close range.

A yellow card for a high tackle reduced Welwyn to 14 men, and Biggleswade capitalised by scoring two unconverted tries.

That left the score at a narrow 14-13 in Welwyn’s favour at half-time.

Welwyn dominated the second half, using the slope and wind to their advantage.

Their pack began to take control, and No. 8 John Milton finished off a pushover try to extend the lead.

Shortly after, Ki Wells made a break and released Joe Young out wide, who was stopped by a high tackle.

The referee awarded a penalty try, taking the score to 28-13.

Denton then crossed for his second of the afternoon, and Young added a sixth after collecting a clever chip from Billy Makay.

Wells maintained a perfect record, landing all six conversions.

Welwyn created further chances in the closing stages, but Biggleswade’s defence held firm to prevent the scoreline from growing even wider.
