A Potters Bar sixth form has been named among England's best according to a new ranking of academic institutions.

The Telegraph has ranked England’s primary and secondary schools and sixth forms, scoring each out of 40.

The score considers A-level results against national and local averages, the number of subjects offered and how many pupils reach university, particularly Russell Group universities.

Dame Alice Owen’s School in Potters Bar ranked ninth, by far the highest of the county’s schools and colleges.

It scored a perfect 40 out of 40, with 92 per cent of pupils going to university and an average A-level grade of A-, well above the national and Hertfordshire average of B-.

This comes as no surprise, with Dame Alice Owen#s receiving high praise numerous times before.

Most recently, it was ranked 7th in Britain by Education research group, Britannia UK, in its top state school for this summer's A-level results.

Think Academy also previously labelled the Potters Bar school the country’s "best state secondary school".

In this year's A-level cohort, 35 per of all grades were awarded at A* level, with  68 per cent of all grades achieved at A*A . 22 per cent of grades were awarded at a grade B meaning that  90 per cent of results were graded A*-B. 96 per cent of grades achieved were A*-C.

Other Hertfordshire schools made the top 100 too.

St George’s School in Harpenden came in second ranking 27th nationally, with a perfect score of 40 out of 40, according to The Telegraph.

The school has climbed 48 places from last year’s ranking, while 93 per cent of its students go on to university.

Sir John Lawes represented Harpenden too, placing in 77th place nationally. The school was given a "very good" score of 38/40 and an average A-level rating of B+.

It climbed eight places in the 2026 ranking.

Not far behind is St Albans' only representation in the top 100, Sandringham School. The school ranked 84th in the country with a rating of 38/40.

At Sandringham, 88 per cent of pupils go on to university, including 52 per cent who reach a “top university”.

Beaumont School and St Albans Girls’ School both fell out of the top 100 after strong rankings last year.

Yavneh College in Borehamwood also made the top 100, ranking 70th. It scored 38 out of 40, with 83 per cent of pupils going on to university.

St Clement Danes School in Chorleywood completed the county’s top-100 entries in 75th place. The school had an average A-level grade of B+ and a rating of 38/30.

Not every sixth form in or near the district is included.
