North Star Nursery opening at site of former Welwyn pub

North Star Day Nursery will open on Great North Road in early 2027 at the former North Star pub.

The Grandir UK nursery will provide early education and care for about 80 children aged 0 to 5.

Plans to close the pub, first announced in May last year, were met with great sadness from the community.

One Facebook user said: "No way... Such a lovely pub and an incredible Sunday dinner - What a shame as there aren't many nice places like this to eat around locally."

Another commented: "So very sad, such a lovely pub and great food too. Spent many an afternoon with friends here, especially sitting outside in the sun.

"Very sad to see another pub close."

The pub was sold by owner McMullen, which said its staff had been offered alternative roles locally.

The North Star is set to become a children's nursery.

North Star is hoping to serve the community in a different way.

Nikki Sewell, Grandir UK’s regional operations director, said: "We are delighted to be bringing North Star, Welwyn to the local community and providing families with greater access to high-quality early years education and childcare.

"Our vision is to create a nurturing, inspiring environment where children feel safe, valued, and confident to explore, learn, and grow."

The nursery is being designed for children, families and sustainability.

It will have indoor and outdoor learning areas, including a large garden for exploration, creativity and physical development.

Ms Sewell said: "Led by experienced educators, the nursery will combine exceptional care with purposeful learning experiences that help every child build the confidence, independence, and skills they need for future success.

"We look forward to working in partnership with families and welcoming children through our doors in 2027."

North Star Day Nursery is recruiting for several early years roles, creating new jobs in the area.

Families who register will receive updates and invitations to visit before the nursery opens.

North Star is part of Grandir UK, a national nursery network providing high-quality care with a community focus.
