JD Wetherspoon still has its sights set on opening a pub in Welwyn Garden City – but continues to search for the right location.

Residents have long called for the popular budget pub chain to open a venue in the town, arguing it would boost the evening economy and offer more affordable options for socialising.

JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "The company is currently looking for a suitable site in the town.

"We believe that one of our pubs would prove popular with people of all ages living in the area."

At least one site has already been ruled out in the search.

The former Lloyds Bank unit on Howardsgate was considered but ultimately discounted because the building was not large enough to meet the requirement of Wetherspoon’s.

The company's ongoing search has sparked new suggestions from the public with some proposing the former Halifax bank site as a good location.

Currently, the closest Wetherspoons are at Harpsfield Hall in Hatfield, roughly a 10-minute drive away, The Angel Vaults in Hitchin, and The Standing Order in Stevenage.

The search for alternative premises continues, leaving residents hopeful that a Wetherspoon pub will eventually arrive in Welwyn Garden City – but still waiting for confirmation of when and where that might be.

A spokesperson for the Welwyn Garden City BID team said: "There is clearly strong public interest in seeing a Wetherspoon's open in the town centre.

"The last correspondence we had with the company related to the former Lloyds Bank building.

"At that time, Wetherspoon advised us that, after carrying out preliminary enquiries, the building's footprint was unfortunately too small for their requirements.

"As the Business Improvement District (BID), our role is to support our existing town centre businesses while also working to attract new investment.

"We believe a Wetherspoon could complement the existing mix of pubs, restaurants and bars, helping to create an even more vibrant daytime and evening economy.

"Should Wetherspoon wish to explore opportunities in the future, we would be pleased to work with the company to help identify a suitable town centre location and support its investment where appropriate."
