An MP has launched a petition to save a "valued" Post Office in Welwyn Garden City which faces closure in the next month.

The Post Office, located inside a Morrisons Daily store on Hall Grove, could be lost unless a retailer agrees to host the service following the shop’s closure.

Andrew Lewin, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, has launched a petition in a bid to save the Post Office from closing.

He said: "Morrisons Local announced a few weeks ago that it would be closing its shop and without an intervention, the Post Office inside the shop will also be lost.

"I know how valued the Post Office is by the local community and pledged to do all I could to keep a Post Office in Hall Grove."

Since the closure was announced, Mr Lewin said he has held talks with Morrisons, the Post Office, and the Co-op to explore options for keeping the branch open.

He believes that the Co-op next door or a future tenant of the Morrisons site could potentially take on the service.

Mr Lewin said: "The Post Office have advertised for a retailer to take on the service in the community and I am grateful to them.

"However, we need a retailer to step up and commit to placing the Post Office counter in their shop.

"There are two natural options: the Co-Op that is next door and a future retailer who may wish to take on the soon to be vacant Morrison’s Local shop."

The Post Office are seeking applicants to run a Post Office in the area, with the closing date for applicants on July 10.

Mr Lewin is asking residents to sign his petition to call on a local retailer to take over the Post Office.

He added: "I can’t force a private business to take on the Post Office, but by demonstrating the level of local demand for the service, we can maximise our chances of convincing a retailer to take it on.”
