Hatfield House is set to appear on a BBC Two show about the Gunpowder Plot which airs tonight (January 10).

The second episode of Lucy Worsley Investigates: The Gunpowder Plot will be on at 9pm, with the historian visiting the country house to examine some the 30,000 pages of the Cecil Papers.

The papers, pulled together from documents written by William Cecil, Lord Burghley and his son Robert Cecil, the First Earl of Salisbury, provide a unique insight into key 1500 and 1600s events.

These include the imprisonment and execution of Mary Queen of Scots, The Spanish Armada, and of course, the Gunpowder Plot, in which a group of English Roman Catholics attempted to blow up Parliament and kill King James I in an effort to bring about a regime change.

"Lucy Worsley Investigates recently visited our archives department for an episode exploring the men and motives behind the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament," read an Instagram post from Hatfield House.

"A segment of the episode was filmed in our archives, showcasing documents from the Cecil Papers.

"You can watch Lucy Worsley Investigates: The Gunpowder Plot on BBC Two today at 9pm. The full series will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer."
