The University of Hertfordshire - based in Hatfield - has secured £1.25 million in funding to launch eight new degree apprenticeships.

It follows two successful funding bids and comes from the Office for Students (OfS).

This increase in degree apprenticeship opportunities is expected over the next 12 months.

The announcement, on March 21, is the second wave of investment by OfS.

The total funding amounts to £14m aimed at increasing the number of Level 6 degree apprenticeships in England.

The University of Hertfordshire received an additional £660k to the £585k secured earlier this year from OfS’s first wave of funding.

The new funding enables the university to introduce two new apprenticeships in speech and language therapy and accounting finance.

These additions complement the six apprenticeships announced in January: therapeutic radiography, diagnostic radiography, social work, dietetics, data science and civil engineering.

The apprenticeships' objectives extend beyond offering new learning opportunities.

They also aim to boost equality of opportunity for Level 6 degree apprenticeships, particularly for residents of Hertfordshire where current provisions are limited.

Furthermore, the funding paves the way for the university to widen its internal apprenticeship operations, ensuring quality education and an excellent service for employer partners.

Celeste Jones, associate director, apprenticeships and professional programmes at the University of Hertfordshire, said: "These are exciting times for the expansion of our degree apprenticeships at the University of Hertfordshire.

"The ongoing, valuable support from OfS charts a pathway to a professional career and a collaborative relationship with employers."

The university offers a variety of apprenticeships to employers and works alongside them to design bespoke, relevant education programmes and award-winning teaching.

John Blake, director for fair access and participation at the OfS, said: "We were looking for universities and colleges to not only describe how OfS funding would expand their degree apprenticeships student numbers and course provision, but also to further demonstrate how they would prioritise recruiting and supporting students from all backgrounds to succeed."
