High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Liz Green visited libraries in Potters Bar and London Colney to promote the joy of reading.

Accompanied by her mascot 'Herty', Liz visited Oakmere, Radlett and London Colney libraries last week as part of her tour of all 46 libraries in the county.

She was joined at the respective libraries by Hertsmere Mayor Cllr Chris Myers and St Albans Mayor Cllr Anthony Rowlands.

The visits aim to encourage reading and highlight the problems faced on a daily basis by those with low literacy.

Liz is also championing the wide range of activities libraries offer to improve health and wellbeing, as well as the opportunity for young people to learn new skills.

She said: "The importance of libraries to their communities cannot be understated.

"One phrase that is consistently mentioned is that libraries offer a safe, warm, non-judgemental space.

"I have learnt a huge amount of the services libraries offer and I am very much enjoying visiting those who work in the libraries, including the many volunteers."

Liz is also raising funds for Herts Community Foundation, which supports small charities across the county, and championing the work of the Shannon Trust - who help people learn to read or improve their reading.
