Hi there readers,

Life as a cockerel is not a simple one, particularly when it involves being thrown away like a piece of rubbish, as was my experience.

I was lucky to make it out alive as I was left in acute danger from predators and cars.

Despite my experiences I remain a trusting, confident, charming and affectionate fellow, who loves a cuddle and is a great favourite with my carers at Southridge, who I happily run to greet when they come to visit with tasty treats or to spruce up my residence.

Being a young, sociable chap who has been here for some considerable time, I admit I often feel quite lonely.

What I long for is to strut my stuff like a Strictly performer on the dancefloor, wriggling my crimson comb and wattle and showing off my red and black feathers, to impress a group of companion hens with my spectacular moves and stunning looks.

In return for their admiration I will keep an eye out for danger, help to harmonise and discourage any bullying in the flock and generally keep everything shipshape.

All I need, apart from some lady hen friends, is a secure, weather and fox-proof enclosure, large enough for "me and the gals" to have plenty of space to scratch around, dust bathe and sun ourselves, together with a cosy indoor shelter to roost and rest.

So you hen lovers, what are you waiting for? Come and meet me. No flock is complete without a "Ranger".
