A Hatfield woman who was morbidly obese and could barely walk has thanked Slimming World after shedding four stone.

Bev Burgess, 61, has experienced fluctuating weight throughout her life.

Following the pandemic in 2020, Bev gained more than three stone, hindering her mobility significantly.

As she struggled to reach local shops without needing an inhaler, her lung specialist deemed her as morbidly obese.

Her life took a turn in August 2020, when her children's father passed away.

The loss deeply affected Bev and her daughters, who expressed fear of losing her too.

Living with Bev during the pandemic, her daughters encouraged her to commit to healthier eating and she lost half a stone.

One day, before the father of her children's funeral, Bev started exercising with home workouts found on YouTube.

However, Bev knew she needed more structured support to maintain her weight loss journey.

Being familiar with Slimming World from previous successful weight loss, Bev decided to re-join the programme.

Consultant Amy Jefferies recalls that Bev committed to a "slow and steady" approach, aiming to enjoy life while losing weight.

Presently, Bev walks everywhere and is regular at water aerobics.

She also attends a cardio aerobics class, proudly stating that she can keep up despite being the oldest attendee.

Bev’s consistent activity has become a part of her daily routine, something she never imagined possible when she started her journey.

Embracing her healthier lifestyle, Bev has swapped cooking in oil and fats for healthier alternatives from Slimming World's 'free food list'.

She shares these alternatives, including her favourite curries, with the group on their closed Facebook page.

Happily engaged in the 5.30pm group, Bev also offers tips and recipes to others.

Consultant Amy Jefferies said: "Bev inspires so many with her hints, tips, and ideas.

"It was a true honour to award her this year's group 'greatest loser' accolade.

"Seeing Bev beam when she realised she won was so heart warming."

New attendees can join Slimming World at St Peter's Church hall every Wednesday from 4pm and at 7.30pm, for more information, contact Amy Jefferies on 07702 911 160.
