It’s probably fair to say that bowlers are fairly active people - one lady from North Mymms Bowls Club is proving that to be the case.

Joyce Clark, who is in her late 80s, has taken on the challenge of walking 100 miles in a month, all in aid of the Isabel Hospice.

It is a charity that is very close to Joyce’s heart, having supported it for many years.

Recently a very dear friend passed away and the Hospice was there for him at the end.

Her daughter-in-law is also a bank nurse there.

The thought behind the 100 mile challenge is that a nurse walks 8,000 steps on an average shift.

And the Welham Green bowler is out every day, clocking up the miles and has, so far, walked 69 miles in 16 days.

Joyce is very active in her local sailing club and Women's Institute, all of whom have dug deep as have her friends and family.

So far she has raised £700.

A spokeswoman for the bowls club said: "Everyone at North Mymms is very proud of her.

"We know that she will complete her challenge over the next two weeks."

The outdoor bowls season is set to start around the end of April.
