There will be changes to Welwyn Hatfield's bin collection days over the Christmas and New Year period.

With Christmas Day falling on a Monday this year and Boxing Day being Tuesday, December 26, bin collections across Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield over the festive period will be a couple of days later than normal for the week beginning December 25.

So if your original collection day is Monday, instead of having your bins picked up on Monday, December 25, they are now scheduled to be emptied on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.

Likewise, bins for Tuesday, December 26 will be collected on Thursday, December 28, and if your regular collection is on Wednesday, your bins will now be collected on Friday, December 29.

With no collections scheduled for Saturday, December 30 and Monday, January 1 being New Year's Day, there will be further changes to the rubbish and recycling collection schedule during the opening three weeks of 2024.

The full bin collection schedule for Welwyn Hatfield from December 25 to Saturday, January 20 is listed below.

Residents can also find the revised bin collection dates on the council’s website at welhat.gov.uk/Christmas-2023.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council's recycling and domestic waste collections are due to return to normal from the week beginning Monday, January 22, 2024.

Council officials are also encouraging residents to reduce Christmas waste and recycle as much as possible over the festive period.

To help with this, Tewin Road Recycling Centre will be open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm over the Christmas holidays, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The council will also now collect excess cardboard provided it is flattened and stacked neatly next to your blue-lidded bin on your usual recycling day as part of an ongoing trial.

If you would like to recycle your real Christmas tree, Isabel Hospice is offering to collect trees between the 5 and 10 January in exchange for a small donation.

You can book a collection online at isabelhospice.org.uk/treecycle.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, executive member for environment, said: “As we all know, the excess waste generated at Christmas time can have a significant impact on the environment, so it’s important that we all do our part by recycling and disposing of our waste responsibly.

"I encourage residents to check their revised bin collection dates, take advantage of the extra cardboard collections and recycle excess waste at Tewin Road Recycling Centre.”
