A special ceremony has been held to mark the 50th birthday of iconic Welwyn Garden City venue Campus West.

The celebrations were led by Welwyn Hatfield Mayor, Cllr Pankit Shah, with special guests including Mark O’Sullivan, the creator of the hit ITV show Tell Me Everything who worked at Campus West in the 1990s.

A cake was cut before guests watched this year’s pantomime, Robin Hood, a nod to the very first pantomime staged by Campus West.

They were also able to view a special display that has been mounted throughout the Campus West building, taking visitors on a nostalgic journey of Campus West through the years.

"I felt very proud to be part of the celebrations marking this important milestone in Campus West’s history," said Cllr Max Holloway, executive member for community and leisure at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

"Looking through the special display of old photographs, autographed promotional posters, newspaper cuttings, marketing materials and props from past shows, we have a lot to celebrate.

"A huge thank you to everyone that has worked at, visited or supported Campus West over the years. It is great that live on stage performances have returned to Campus West, with some performances selling out.

Campus West opened in 1973, with distinguished actress and local resident Dame Flora Robson cutting the ribbon to a fanfare from the Band of The Scots Guards.

Despite early excitement, Campus West soon ran into problems, with claims of vandalism, and worrying rumours that the building itself was unsafe.

In the 1980s, West One, a nightclub with a capacity of 800, a state-of-the-art sound system, stylish décor and Welwyn Hatfield's longest bar opened, turning around the fortunes of Campus West.

West One closed in 1998, and Campus West began to look more like we know it today, with Roller City, live shows and movies the main attractions at the beloved Welwyn Garden City venue.
