An electrical fire has been named as the cause of the fire that forced the temporary closure of Gosling Sports Park last week.

The incident took place at around 2.32pm on Friday (August 18), when Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of smoke in the building.

Two fire engines, from Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield fire stations were sent to the scene.

At 3.50pm, Gosling Sports Park announced on social media that it had temporarily closed due to the incident.

An electrical fire was located within a unit on the site, which was then extinguished using dry powder.

By 5.14pm, facilities such as tennis courts, golf driving range, soft play, trampoline and play park and ski centre had been reopened.

The leisure centre's gym, fitness class studios and spa remained closed for some time after the incident.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 2.32pm on Friday, August 18, to reports of smoke in the building at Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn Garden City.

"Two fire engines, from Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield fire stations were sent to the scene, where firefighters located an electrical fire in a unit on site.

"Firefighters isolated the unit and extinguished the fire with dry powder."

A Spokesperson for Gosling Sports Park added: "We apologise to customers for any inconvenience following yesterday afternoon's (Friday's) closure of the gym, studios and spa at Gosling Sports Park following a small electrical fire in the gym plant room.

"Our incident response and evacuation procedures were put into place and there were no injuries reported.

"The Fire Brigade attended and dealt with the incident and advised the Centre could reopen Saturday."

"Tennis, golf, soft play, trampoline park and skiing were unaffected.

"Customers will be refunded for booked sessions."
