Isabel Hospice has celebrated winning an award at the Charity Retail Awards 2023, as part of the Charity Retail Association’s annual flagship conference.

The Charity Retail Association (CRA) are the only body in the UK that represent the interests of charity retailers.

This year, the awards highlighted the resilience of charity shops in a challenging time, with the cost-of-living crisis presenting challenges in every aspect of charity retail trading, from bills to concerns about donations.

Isabel Hospice head of retail and marketing, Charlotte Greenwood, picked up the award for ‘Leadership’ at the ceremony, for her instrumental work in developing the charity’s sustainability initiative, Tonnes of Care, and in empowering and developing her retail leadership team.

The Tonnes of Care initiative, launched last April, is a five-year sustainability initiative to save 25,000 tonnes from landfill by 2027 – and at the same time, raise vital income to fund Welwyn Garden City-based Isabel Hospice’ life-changing care.

Commenting on the win, Charlotte said: “It was an honour just to be one of the three finalists, but to actually win, is such a great achievement and I am very grateful.

"I am proud to lead a dynamic and passionate retail team who are committed to providing excellent customer service.

"The work we do within our Isabel Hospice shops and eBay platform is important to support the circular economy by saving preloved items from landfill.

"By purchasing items in our shops, our customers are helping to raise vital funds for Isabel Hospice."

Charlotte added: “It’s a privilege to be part of a local organisation doing such good work for the community and I look forward to leading them on to even better exciting things including the prospect of opening new shops soon.”

As Isabel Hospice moves into the second year of the Tonnes of Care initiative, nearly 36,000 bags of good quality donations have been saved from ending up in landfill in the past three months.

These goods have been used to stock Isabel Hospice’s 15 shops and the eBay online store.

All the Charity Retail Awards nominees were invited to an awards ceremony at Harrogate Convention Centre on June 28, where all the winners were announced.

Isabel Hospice's Galleria shop in Hatfield was also a finalist for the WOW factor awards for Best Shop Windows for the third year in a row.

Tonnes of Care turns people’s unused and unwanted clothing, homeware, electricals and more into nursing care by encouraging the public to donate good quality items to their shops.
