A non-profit specialist nursery based in Welwyn Garden City is appealing for help to raise £150,000 to cover the costs of the building they require to continue helping children on the spectrum.

Carter’s Sunflowers - which currently runs from Ludwick Family Centre in Hall Grove - is a nursery for children with autism or with social communication needs.

In April 2021, Carter’s Sunflowers opened its doors to just six children. Now it supports 24 families across Hertfordshire.

Specialist teachers worked alongside speech and language and occupational therapists to ensure staff were highly trained and ready to provide an inclusive learning environment where every child could be their unique self and still learn.

The non-profit said: "Our nursery is full and there is a waiting list for places. Carter's Sunflowers receives phone calls from desperate parents every day. Many of these children have been turned away from their local nursery, others find the sensory experience so overwhelming that they can’t cope.

"Unfortunately, we have been unable to secure a council building and have to look for a commercial building. This comes with big costs."

The nursery is fundraising to cover the costs of the building for one year, and at the time of publishing had raised £4,940.

It will also use the funds to make the building fit for purpose for the children.
