A protest against Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps, and his plans for new strike laws which could see workers sacked, is being held in Hatfield on Saturday.

Organised by campaign group Enough is Enough, the protest will be held outside of Mr Shapps' office at Maynard House in The Common at 11am, and is part of wider protests set up by the group across the UK.

"This Monday, the government will try to ram through its new anti-strike law," read a statement on the protest from Enough is Enough.

"The law targets frontline workers – from nurses and paramedics to firefighters and rail workers – threatening to take away their right to strike.

"And if workers don’t accept its terms, they face the sack. We say 'NO'. And Tory MPs need to hear us, loud and clear.

"Join us in protesting outside Welwyn Hatfield MP and minister responsible Grant Shapps's office on Saturday morning."

Business secretary Shapps has set out plans to enforce minimum service levels during strike action, including for ambulance staff and railway workers, with the new bill requiring some employees to work during a strike and could be sacked if they refuse.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Mr Shapps said: "No one is talking about sacking nurses... nothing we are announcing today in this bill from the despatch box is about getting rid of nurses any more than any employment contract has to be followed."

He added that the Government "absolutely believes in the right to strike" but it is "duty bound" to protect the lives and livelihoods of the public.

"We don't want to use this legislation but we must ensure the safety of the British public."
