Newly released data from the 2021 census reveals the gender identities and sexual orientations of people in Welwyn Hatfield.

According to the data, 89.26 per cent of people aged 16 years or over in Welwyn Hatfield are straight or heterosexual. 1.2 per cent said they were gay or lesbian, and 1.42 per cent said they were bisexual. 0.39 per cent gave another sexual orientation, while 7.74 per cent did not provide an answer.

The figures for Welwyn Hatfield are broadly similar to those for England and Wales as a whole, where 89.4 per cent identified as straight or heterosexual, and 3.2 per cent identified as gay or lesbian, bisexual, or another sexual orientation.

Meanwhile, 93 per cent of people aged 16 or over in Welwyn Hatfield said that their gender identity was the same as their sex registered at birth. 0.19 per cent said that their gender identity was different from their sex registered at birth, and 6.46 per cent did not provide an answer.

Among people aged 16 or over in Welwyn Hatfield, 0.11 per cent said they were trans women, 0.1 per cent said they were trans men, and 0.09 per cent said they were non-binary.

As with sexual orientation, the data for gender identity in Welwyn Hatfield was similar to the data across all of England and Wales. Across the country, 93.5 per cent said their gender identity was the same as their sex registered at birth, and 0.5 per cent said their gender identity was different from their sex registered at birth.

The 2021 census was the first to include questions on sexual orientation and gender identity, which were voluntary.

Data released in November showed the extent of social change in Welwyn Hatfield between 2011 and 2021.
