A science-savvy Welwyn Garden City girl was given the chance to become vice president for the day at AstraZeneca.

Lottie, 16, was supported by Plan International UK for International Day of the Girl.

She took over the company’s manufacturing site in Macclesfield earlier this month, where she had the opportunity to learn about the global pharmaceutical industry and took the lead on discussions about gender equality.

The takeover was part of Plan International UK’s activity to celebrate and recognise the power of girls, which saw girls taking over positions across the worlds of business, media, technology, and politics.

Lottie said: “There’s less uptake of female employees in pharmaceuticals and in STEM across the board, so being shown that this is something you can do, and that people are here to support you is the first step in making that change.

“It was an incredible experience, there’s a real sense of community seeing everyone work together. I learned so much and feel more prepared for a career in STEM.” Welwyn Hatfield Times: Lottie took over the company’s manufacturing site in Macclesfield earlier this month, where she had the opportunity to learn about the global pharmaceutical industry and took the lead on discussions about gender equality. Lottie’s takeover with AstraZeneca was among several that took place across the UK, continuing the company's long-standing relationship with Plan International UK.

Since 2010, the charity has partnered with AstraZeneca to deliver its Young Health Programme.
