A WGC car park will temporarily close while a controversial extension is built at the borough council’s headquarters.

The Cherry Tree car park, which is currently open to the public at weekends, will shut while work on Welwyn Hatfield Council’s Campus East building is done.

It will close on March 31.

A council spokesman said: “Construction work is expected to begin in early May, ending in early 2015, and internal works will be completed subsequently.

“The construction contract will be awarded at a special cabinet meeting on March 25.”

A £4.4million extension, pictured above, at the back of the council’s offices was approved by councillors in December.

The development sparked a row between the council and the Welwyn Garden City Society, which hit out over the design, branding it out of keeping with its surroundings.
