A TEENAGER has turned his life around to become the UK's youngest licensed pilot - before he can even drive.

Daniel Scott, 17, from Brookmans Park, frequently found himself in a spot of trouble at school before his love of flying got him back on the straight and narrow.

His mum Olga told the WHT he used to be suspended from Chancellor's School, in Brookmans Park, at least once a month.

Olga, 49, said: "He was caught smoking many times.

"He didn't listen at lessons and he wasn't interested in studying.

"He was threatened with expulsion and suspension all the time.

"The teachers didn't have much hope for him."

But Daniel's behaviour improved markedly after he started learning to fly at East Herts Flying School, based at Panshanger Aerodrome, WGC.

Daniel, of Moffats Lane, admitted he was a bit of a "naughty kid" in the past, but said he was "proud" to have earned his pilot's licence at such a young age.

Indeed, after he started learning to fly, he set himself the challenge of completing his training before his 17th birthday, a feat he accomplished with four days to spare.

His instructor, Ivan Kurbanov, said flying "came natural" to Daniel.

"Straight from his first lesson I had no doubt he would go solo very quickly," he said.

"In fact, had it not been for his school studies and inclement weather, he would have progressed a lot quicker."

Chancellor's headteacher Stuart Phillips said: "Daniel's school life has not been without its ups and downs, but he is a shining example of how you should never give up on our young people.

"His achievements are a testament to his hard work and commitment."

Daniel is currently studying for his A-levels and intends to read physics at university in the future.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said nine private pilot licences had been issued so far this year.

He said: "Daniel is currently the youngest licensed pilot in the UK.
