MORE than 1,500 motorists were penalised for breaking the 40mph limit in the first full month of the A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel roadworks.
During July, 1,561 speeding tickets were issued, around 52 a day.
County councillor Stuart Pile said: "While these figures are not as bad as we have seen during previous roadworks, a worrying number of motorists are still speeding."
"With the school holidays about to end and a corresponding increase in traffic, the Hertfordshire Safety Camera Partnership is concerned the number of drivers ignoring the limits will rise - causing extra risk to road workers.
