THE nation waits to see who Fabio Capello will pick in goal for England’s must-win World Cup match against Algeria tonight (Friday).

There have been widespread calls for WGC’s very own David James to get the nod ahead of Robert Green, whose howler cost the Three Lions victory in their opening match against the USA.

And one bookmaker has stopped taking bets on the Portsmouth shot stopper lining up for England in Cape Town.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said punters had been betting up to 2,000 a time for James.

He said: “We began to see a flurry of support for David James, with several three figure bets staked in Cardiff, Greater London and the Channel Islands, with one punter trying to bet 2,000.

“These are not the type of bets we normally see on a market of this nature and as support for the other two has dried up we have closed the book at least temporarily.

“We’re confident that Fabio will not have made his decision known yet but when a market likes this begins to suggest a one horse race it is time to take defensive action just in case.”

But Welwyn Hatfield Times readers remain unconvinced Capello will opt for James.

We’ve been running a poll since Wednesday asking whether you think the former Sir Frederic Osborn pupil would be picked, ahead of Green.

And taking a vote count at time of writing, the jury was well and truly out – with 50 per cent saying he would, and 50 per cent saying he wouldn’t.
