The 2016 Welwyn Hatfield Sports Awards are under starters’ orders as residents can now begin nominating their local sporting heroes.

The awards celebrate the success and achievements of athletes, coaches, teams and schools across Welwyn Hatfield.

Councillor Darren Bennett, lead member for sport, said: “These are community awards - not just for the elite athletes.

“People can nominate sportspeople of all ages and ability levels that have displayed hard work, dedication and demonstrated sporting spirit in their chosen field.”

Last year’s winner of the Primary School Team of the Year award was Welwyn St Mary’s Primary School, which was nominated for their table tennis team.

Headteacher Mary Westley, said: “It gave the team a real boost to be given the award - it was a source of pride among the students and raised the school’s profile in the community.

“It also encouraged a lot of other students to get more involved in sport.”
