Hundreds of homes in Welwyn Hatfield have been left without power after heavy storms and high winds swept through the county last night (Sunday).

Residents of Woolmer Green and Knebworth took to twitter after the power was cut off at about 7am this morning (Monday).

A member of staff from Woolmer Green Commuity Centre tweeted: “A state of emergency now exists in #WoolmerGreen as many of its residents are still without their morning #cuppa #sos.”

A spokeswoman from the UK Power Network said the damage had mostly been caused by high winds damaging power lines.

She said: “UK Power Networks engineers worked through the night and will continue today, moving from job to job to repair the damage and restore power as quickly as is safely possible.

“We will be carrying out helicopter patrols to check overhead power lines.”

At 1pm the problems had not yet been fixed and it is not yet known when residents will be reconnected.
