Strong winds kept firefighters and road engineers busy across Hertfordshire last night, but Welwyn Hatfield appears to have escaped relatively lightly.

Hertfordshire Highways dealt with 107 emergency calls, mostly trees and branches fallen across roads, and 121 further weather-related incidents classed as non-emergency.

Hertfordshire firefighters attended about 20 incidents, but officers in both Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield say they dealt with very few weather-related calls in the borough.

However, a fallen tree hit a car in Guessens Grove, Welwyn Garden City, and two Welwyn streets, Reynards Road and School Lane, were blocked.

A county council spokesman said the west of Hertfordshire had been hit harder than other areas.

The Met Office predicts wind speeds may increase again, up to 41 miles an hour by this evening.
