DETAILS of a £9m refurbishment of Hatfield railway station have gone on public display.

First Capital Connect, Hertfordshire County Council and Network Rail hosted a two-day exhibition at York House in Old Hatfield last week, highlighting the radical changes being brought in at the Great North Road station.

Among the proposals are plans to transform the north car park into a multi-storey facility for just under 150 vehicles – more than the total number of cars currently able to park at the station.

That would mean the car park would close for almost a year while the work is carried out.

But Larry Heyman, integration and partnership manager at First Capital Connect, said season ticket holders who use the north car park would be accommodated.

“The northern side is going to redeveloped into a multi-storey car park, and work is due to start this winter,” Mr Heyman said.

“In the meantime, we will create a temporary single deck car park on the south side that will help some of the cars displaced, but not all.

“We’re looking to provide alternative parking in WGC, either working with Welwyn Hatfield Council or alternative parking providers close to [WGC] station.

“Any season ticket holder that lives on the north side of Hatfield will be able to park in WGC for exactly the same rate, and any difference in rail fare will be covered by us.”

Following the completion of the multi-storey car park, the south side car park will be turned into a new bus interchange.

Another key improvement is the introduction of lifts for disabled passengers. Currently people with mobility difficulties can only get off at WGC.

Herts Highways will also be making improvements to the A1000.

Mr Heyman said the exhibition went “very, very well indeed”.

“A lot of people came forward to see us, close to 200, which was excellent and the feedback was generally very good,” he said.
