‘Ida Glen ‘Billie’ Brown
Ida Glen 'Billie' Brown Died peacefully on Sunday 3rd of March 2024 at Lister Hospital aged 106 years. Despite fracturing her hip in a fall, she was up and walking within days and quickly became a favourite of those in charge of her care at Lister Hospital, Stevenage. After being visited by family and many close friends, she sadly passed away on 3rd of March. She will be united with her beloved husband, (Denis, RIP 1997), and sadly missed by her loving family; son, (Andrew), daughter (Elizabeth), grandchildren, (Bruce, Hilary, Serena, and Richard), and great-grandchildren (Finley, Callum, Ivy and Olive) and many, many dear friends with cherished memories. Glen trained to be a nurse at The London Teaching hospital before and during World War 11. After the war Glen qualified as a Swimming, Gym, and English teacher. Glen was an ardent member of the Barking Swimming Club and qualified as an Essex County Swimming Coach and adjudicator for the Royal LifeSaving Society. She worked for the GLC as a Swimming instructress for many years teaching the children from the East End of London, how to swim with confidence in the water. Glen and her husband Denis loved travelling and visited many countries in Europe, U.S.A., Canada, Africa and India, making new and long standing friendships. Glen and Denis retired and bought a mobile home in the South of France, where they experienced the happiness, beauty, and wonderful walks, in the wilderness that was then France, that they so enjoyed. In 1990's they moved from Barking to Digswell, Hertfordshire, where Denis sadly died in 1997. Glen's visit to India inspired her to pursue her studies of Eastern Philosophy and she continued to be a devoted pupil at the School of Economic Science in London where she learned Calligraphy and Sanskrit, discovered the poet Rumi, learned about Eastern Philosophy and Shakespeare. Glen made many firm and lasting friendships within the S.E.S., where she will be remembered with a happy smile. Glen was a valuable member of local wine groups in the Hertford area, the Bible group in Tewin and the library in Welwyn Garden City. She related stories of her travels and adventures, and all will remember her listening, patience, laughter, advice, and extensive knowledge which will be sorely missed by all. Cremation to be held at Harwood Park, Stevenage at 10.15 on Friday April 5th 2024. The event will be broadcast live for those unable to attend. Please ring the Co-op Welwyn Garden City 01707 333021 for further information.
