SIR - Regarding the 81-year-old pensioner forced to stay indoors, I used to work for Welwyn Hatfield Council and the Commission for New Towns, 1974-1992. Then, when we had bad weather conditions, the council's own workforce cleared and salted every path in Welwyn/Hatfield giving priority to pensioner-disabled housing schemes, then all path slopes, then general paths, even working weekends.
