SIR - Ian White says it would be nice to see the stars again if the street lights were turned off after midnight (Letters, February 6). I feel that the matter of personal safety of residents is more important.

Another idea is when the county council replace street lamps they use the sort that do not send a glow in to the night sky, thus returning the stars visibility.

However I do agree that shops and other businesses should turn their lights out and shut down their computers when no one is there. Perhaps even pass on their savings in electricity bills to their customers. I would also like to point out that I often see lights on late at night in the library and other council buildings.
