SIR - Just a short letter to say that I am forming a friends group to look after Haldens Park. This is the area between Haldens and Digswell which is very neglected and has a Thames Water soakaway in it.

Thames Water has agreed to raise the water level in the soakaway and tidy it up and we, as the new friends group, will organise the thinning of trees around it to form a new nature reserve for Welwyn Hatfield.

It is full of bullrushes which is a fairly unique environment for Hertfordshire and beneficial to frogs, newts and and waterfowl.

Only yesterday I saw a pheasant while looking at the 'pond'.

Any volunteers to join our newly formed group are invited to contact me on 01438 714726. It will involve a couple of hours a month from January.

Cllr Howard Hughes, Haldens Ward.
