Sir - I read with some interest the letter by Cllr Dean in reply to my criticisms concerning his withdrawal of the officer support for the council's health working group which effectively emasculates it (WHT, February 13). This, at the very time when we need every form of persuasion, influence and pressure to get the Herts health trusts to make the best use of the QE2 site - the "Health Campus" referred to in my letter of January 9.

In that letter Dr Eric Sherrard and I stated "What we are suggesting is doing something positive and constructive to get the very best health care in the East Anglia region". In his letter, Cllr Dean says: "We should be fighting hard to get the best possible services and the most that we can out of the PCT for our local general hospital."

Those two statements are not a million miles apart, so there is no disagreement about WHAT we are both trying to achieve. It is the HOW on which we differ - I find it very difficult to understand how Cllr Dean can be "fighting hard" when he reduces the capacity of the one body in the Borough Council that has some clout in the continuing battle for our health services in Welwyn Hatfield.
