SIR - Dr Lewis and Dr Sherrard say we should "stop complaining and whinging" about the closure of the QE2 (letters, January 9) and accept the decision that will undoubtedly cause death to hundreds and suffering to thousands over the coming decades.

People should never accept incompetent, short sighted governance of something so vital as our health system, especially when it will destroy the quality of life of our children and children's children.

Drs Lewis and Sherrard claim a Judicial Review will accomplish nothing. Not so - it will expose the extreme incompetence of the whole process and could very well lead to all the senior executives of the NHS Trust losing their positions and a new management team being brought in.

It would lead to short term uncertainty but that is infinitely better than guaranteed destruction of health services it has taken generations to build up.

Dr Lewis and Sherrard offer up a fuzzy idea of a "health campus" as a consolation. This is of course propaganda with no substance behind it. The truth is most of the QE2 site will probably be sold off to fill the coffers of the trust and help them achieve foundation status.

The reality can be found in the article about the frantic efforts to get air ambulance coverage for the area. Once the QE2 closes a short and cheap ride to a local hospital in a local ambulance will be replaced with a helicopter lift costing well over £10,000 pounds per trip. So much for cost efficiency.

We are always being told that "doing nothing is not an option". We now have the most expensive health system in the world (public plus private). We deserve better then shabby management that dooms generations to unnecessary suffering so managers can appear to "do something".
