Players, staff and supporters of Welwyn Garden City Football Club may have needed to dig out their A-Zs to find the Pexhurst Stadium but they also saw signposts for the Southern League Division One Central play-offs grow ever larger.

The 2-0 win over Kidlington came in their first game at Herns Lane since January.

And while it only moved them up to ninth, five points adrift of North Leigh in fifth, a string of postponements means they have a minimum of three games in hand on seven of the eight sides above them.

This win also gave Marc Weatherstone’s side their first double of the season, replicating the success and score in Oxfordshire way back in August.

They dominated this encounter territorially from the early minutes, but only some poor finishing and the agility and abilities of visiting keeper Jack Hopwood kept them waiting for a goal.

When it finally arrived, perhaps using an outdated version of the street map, there were just 15 minutes to go and the clincher turned up in stoppage time.

Hopwood had been called into action as early as the third minute, forced to tip away a cross-shot from Josh Bryant at full stretch.

Dernell Wynter was the next home player to have an effort, that was charged down in front of goal, and the Kidlington keeper then produced a fine double stop from WGC skipper Brad Wadkins, firstly blocking a side-foot attempt and then recovering quickly to throw himself in front of the follow up.

The best of the saves came in stoppage time at the end of the half.

WGC’s man-of-the match Gucci Soulya-Osekanongo, hit a excellent swerving effort that looked certain to count, until Hopwood tipped it onto the far post and behind.

The second-half opened in a similar vein with Welwyn dominant.

Jack Vasey sent a fine through ball to Wynter but his fierce drive was too close to Hopwood who beat it away easily.

The keeper was stretched further by a Cyrus Babaie effort as the forward cut in from the left and his opposite number, Charlie Crowley, was also given something to do 20 minutes into the second-half.

It was Kidlington's first and only dangerous move, Owen James's ball forward splitting the defence and Piers Walton looked as if he would tap in until the WGC keeper, going the wrong way, somehow diverted it away.

That would have been an injustice and with 75 minutes on the clock, Welwyn finally found their scoring boots.

On-loan full-back Charlie McDonald, making an impressive debut from St Albans City, played an excellent ball in from the right to find Wadkins.

He met that with a lovely clipped effort into the far corner to finally beat Hopwood.

Their second came in the last of five added minutes.

Lynton Goss, having a quiet afternoon, by his recent standards, looked to be running down the clock, with a chase to the by-line, but he reached it and pulled over a low cross that had a number of WGC players lining up to finish.

It was Soulya-Oskanongo who took the responsibility, collecting the ball and firing low past the defiant Hopwood and in off the post.
