Residents are invited to partake in an event marking Holocaust Memorial Day, hosted by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

A memorial ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, January 25 at The Campus Arena in Welwyn Garden City.

This year's theme, 'Fragility of Freedom' is aimed at reflecting the struggles experienced by individuals on the receiving end of prejudice and discrimination globally.

Councillor Paul Zukowskyj, leader of the council, said: "The theme of ‘Fragility of Freedom’ reminds us of the importance of defending human rights and dignity, and standing up against hatred and intolerance.

"The loss of human rights and personal freedoms for us all was what prompted me to get involved in politics, so it is very important and personal for me.

"I hope that many residents will join us for this meaningful ceremony."

The event, starting at 11am and lasting for 30 minutes, will begin with the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Councillor Pankit Shah.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant Anthony Chapman, Ava Mohammad Aghaei, vice chair of Welwyn Hatfield Youth Council, and Wendy Lidgate of the Welwyn Hatfield Interfaith Group are also expected to express their views.

A minute's silence will honour the event, along with prayers from the Welwyn Hatfield Jewish Congregation.

Attendance is free with no prior booking required.
