THE first Sonisphere 2014 headliner line-up announcement for the rock festival being held at Knebworth Park next summer will be confirmed on Monday, December 2.
The international touring festival returns to the grounds of Knebworth House from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6 after a two-year absence.
The event will be a celebration of 40 years of festivals at the iconic Hertfordshire venue.
Organisers are set to announce the first headliners playing the 2014 festival at 5.30pm on Monday, with early bird tickets also going on sale.
Promoters KiliLive (@KiliLive), the team behind Sonisphere, tweeted on Friday: “Sonisphere Festival 2014 will announce the first headliners on Monday evening. Early bird tickets also on sale then #Sonisphere #Knebworth”
The UK leg of the rock and metal event returns to the Hertfordshire stately home next summer after two years away.
Before 2012’s shock cancellation, Sonisphere had progressed from being the newest name on the UK festival circuit to an award-winning big player on the summer calendar.
Created by KiliLive and K2, the European touring extravaganza exploded onto the UK scene in 2009 with Linkin Park and Metallica headlining a then two-day rock and metal event in the grounds of Knebworth House.
The inaugural Sonisphere won the ‘Best New Festival’ gong at that year’s UK Festival Awards.
Shock-rocker Alice Cooper, German industrial metallers Rammstein and heavy metal legends Iron Maiden topped the bill at the Hertfordshire stately home the following year, with Bruce Dickinson et al selling-out the Sunday.
Sonisphere’s 2011 bill bagged the UK Festival Awards’ line-up of the year after putting on thrash metal’s Big 4 – Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth – for the first time in this country on the Friday.
Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro were elevated to headline status the following day, and Slipknot closed the three-day event on the Sunday night.
However, the 2012 line-up announcement was delayed until February of that year and the festival was then axed the following month.
Sonisphere’s fourth UK edition was due to be headlined by Queen featuring Adam Lambert, Kiss and Faith No More.
After failing to lock in big name headliners for 2013, promoters decided to take another year off.
At the time a Team Sonisphere statement read: “We have already started work on Sonisphere UK 2014, so hope to be able to bring you news about that later next year.”
Rock fans will discover who has been booked for 2014 on Monday evening.
