REGULAR listeners to Hertbeat FM will have been unable to escape a new song currently troubling the airwaves.
It’s a seemingly upbeat little number entitled What Would You Do?, and it’s the first single by up-and-coming artist Scarlette Fever, released on download on Monday, March 1.
The track is currently enjoying heavy rotation on the Old Knebworth-based radio station and Scarlette’s debut album, Medication Time, is due to follow later in the year.
And after years of trying to crack the music industry, Scarlette – aka Karen Barrow from Codicote – is hoping 2010 will finally see her make it big.
After finishing her A-levels, the former Stanborough School student has performed at weddings, auditioned for Mis-Teeq – the band that launched the career of WGC star Alesha Dixon – and even aborted an original album of ballads, before reinventing herself as Scarlette Fever.
“I eventually learned that to be a singer, you have to be true to yourself,” said Scarlette, 28.
“I’m a very excessive, extreme person with a wild imagination and Medication Time captures every aspect of me.”
The album title is a nod to both the therapeutic nature of music and a quote from 1975 Oscar-winning drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher.
And her love of film is something Scarlette hopes will become a more active part of her future career.
“Since I already approach every song as a film, I’d like to write for films,” she said. “It’s a dream, but if you dream, you might as well dream big.”
