ALBUMS by Blur, The Smiths, Kaiser Chiefs, The Zutons and Graham Coxon have all been produced by Stephen Street. Welwyn Garden City band The Subways can now be added to that illustrious list.

The three-piece alternative rockers – guitarist and lead singer Billy Lunn, bass player Charlotte Cooper and drummer Josh Morgan – have started work on their new album in the studio with the legendary producer.

The as-yet-untitled third album follows debut Young For Eternity, which was released in 2005, and second long player All or Nothing, which came out in 2008.

Writing on their website, the band said: “We’re really excited about the new songs and have just gone into the studio with the producer Stephen Street (Blur/The Smiths/Kaiser Chiefs/Graham Coxon).”

However, working with a renowned producer is nothing new for the WGC trio, who were regulars playing The Green Room at the Doctors Tonic pub in their early days.

The Lightning Seeds star Ian Broudie produced the band’s debut and Garbage drummer Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana classic Nevermind and the upcoming new Foo Fighters record, was at the helm for their heavier second album.

Stephen Street is pleased with the recordings and predicts the band will storm 2011’s festivals.

Writing on his official website, he said: “In the earlier part of December I was recording with The Subways, who are making a great return with their new collection of songs for their third album.

“The session is going great so far and I reckon they are going to smash it at the festivals next summer with their live set.”

The album is due out in 2011 and fans of The Subways can follow the recording progress from studio to music store by signing up for an innovative way to get closer to the band – and raise money for charity at the same time.

Billy, Charlotte and Josh explained: “We recently came across PledgeMusic and realised that this is the perfect way to give you lot – our amazing fans – an opportunity to follow the making of the album from day one of recording, through to its release, while making a pile of money for charity in the process!”

Fans can make a pledge for various exclusive Subways items via the band’s website and funds will be donated to two charities close to the group – Clic Sargent, a UK charity caring for children and young people with cancer, and The National Autistic Society, as Josh, the band’s drummer, has Asperger Syndrome.

Among the items pledgers can buy vary from singing on an album track to spending an afternoon in the rehearsal studio with the band or going on a video shoot with them.

Other special experiences include having The Subways come to your house or school to play an acoustic set, guestlist passes to various concerts and even gold discs.

Every pledger will also receive a digital download of the album as soon as it is released.

A full list of what items and experiences are available can be found on the band’s website or via PledgeMusic. See related links above.

“Our plan is to have a lot of fun while making this album and hope by doing this it is as much fun for you too,” added Billy, Charlotte and Josh, who supported AC/DC at Wembley Stadium in 2009.

“We can’t wait to get this album out and get gigging again!”
