Life might not traditionally start at 60, but for Royston-based accountant John Froggett it would certainly appear that way, as an exciting new ‘career’ beckons – as a performer!

John has serenaded his family as long as they can remember, but just recently his velvet voice has attracted the attention of Hertfordshire record label Folkstock Records.

So much so that John, under the stage name of Joe Rose, will open Saturday’s all-day music festival being organised by Folkstock in Baldock.

Record label founder Helen Meissner said: “I just love it when you can give someone the opportunity to perform to an audience, and so I have offered John, as Joe Rose, his stage name, the opening slot.”

This will be the first time Joe has performed in public, and Saturday’s crowd in the garden of The White Lion can look forward to a few familiar songs as well as some penned for him by Norwich-based award-winning singer-songwriter Marina Florance.

Traditionally this weekend for the town has been taken over by the Balstock charity festival.

However, Folkstock has drawn massive crowds for its stages over the last five years, so the High Street pub was keen to continue the family-friendly musical extravaganza, even though the official Balstock festival is having a year off.

The Folkstock line-up this year includes performers from as far afield as Bristol and North Yorkshire joining an array from closer to home.

Opened by Joe Rose’s debut, there’s Kate Dimbleby, who has wowed audiences at Edinburgh Festival, gaining five star reviews for both her live performance and her recently released album.

The lively performance from Kate will be flanked by acts released and promoted by Folkstock Records, ranging from Zoe Wren, who won a financial bursary from PRS for Music for her latest EP and has been played on BBC Radio 2, Minnie Birch, who has been played on Radio 1, and Roxanne de Bastion, who recently supported Marillion on tour.

Also appearing will be Americana-influenced Kaity Rae, while Folkstock producer Lauren Deakin Davies, as her alter ego DIDI, will round off the evening with her band.

Co-hosted by Mike Naylor from BBC Three Counties Radio, this unmissable event is free to attend and will be raising funds for Cancer Research.

The music starts at 1pm.
